Emu Creek Camping Area (Benarkin State Forest, South Burnett)
Deep Forest Escape Beside Emu Creek
Emu Creek Camping Area is a quintessential bush camping destination located 16km into the Benarkin State Forest. While slightly further than its sister site, Clancy’s, Emu Creek offers a more secluded atmosphere set amongst tall stringybark and ironbark trees. The area is famous for its large, permanent waterhole, which serves as a vital sanctuary for local wildlife and a refreshing swimming spot for visitors during the warmer months.
Camping and Facilities
The campground consists of a large, open grassy flat with no individually defined sites, allowing for a flexible layout for groups of up to 150 people. Unlike many remote sites, Emu Creek features elevated amenities:
- Amenities: Clean flushing toilets and cold-water shower cubicles (bring your own shower bag/equipment if preferred, though cubicles are provided).
- Water: Non-potable tap water is available from tanks but must be treated or boiled before drinking.
- Fireplaces: Wood-fired barbecues and communal fire rings are provided. Visitors must bring their own milled firewood, as collecting wood from the State Forest is prohibited.
- Pet Policy: Dogs are strictly prohibited in the Emu Creek camping area to protect local wildlife. However, they are permitted on a leash in the adjacent Day-Use Area.
Nature and Wildlife Spotting
Emu Creek is a haven for nature lovers. The steep rock walls across the creek are often frequented by Brush-tailed Rock-wallabies, while the dense canopy supports an incredible diversity of birdlife, including Scaly-breasted Lorikeets, Kookaburras, and the elusive Channel-billed Cuckoo. At night, keep an eye out for fireflies near the water’s edge and listen for the calls of nearby Koalas.
Access and Safety Information
The journey to Emu Creek is part of the adventure, involving a 16km scenic gravel drive along Forest Drive. The road includes steep, narrow, and winding sections that can become exceptionally slippery after rain.
- Vehicles: Accessible by conventional 2WD vehicles with high clearance in dry conditions, but 4WD is recommended, especially for those towing. Watch for active logging trucks using the same road.
- No Mobile Coverage: There is zero mobile reception at the campsite; ensure your Queensland National Parks booking is confirmed before leaving the highway.
- Generators: To preserve the natural soundscape, generators are not permitted.
