Taabinga Station (Haly Creek) – Vineyard Wines & Farmstay in South Burnett
A Living Legacy: Queensland’s Pastoral History Since 1846
Taabinga Station is a heritage-listed working cattle property and vineyard that stands as one of Queensland’s oldest continuously occupied stations. Located in Haly Creek (20km west of Kingaroy), this historic estate is managed by descendants of the pioneering Youngman, Leu, and Leu-Marshall families. Spanning nearly 180 years of history, the station offers 100% authentic farmstay experiences set against the backdrop of original outbuildings, a private cemetery, and a boutique single-vineyard.
Boutique Farmstay Accommodation
Accommodation at Taabinga Station is now primarily managed via Airbnb, offering guests a choice of beautifully restored, self-contained heritage buildings:
- Jack’s Cottage (Built 1909): A “Guest Favourite” 3-bedroom cottage (sleeps 6) featuring wisteria-shaded verandahs, a vine-covered pergola with a pizza oven, and a Shropshire wood-burning stove. Family-friendly amenities include a trampoline, bikes, toys, and a 10-seater outdoor table.
- The Farmhouse: A spacious 4-bedroom home (sleeps 7) located on a private 20-acre home paddock. It features a pool table, an espresso machine, and a covered verandah perfect for watching kangaroos by the station’s dam and Haly Creek.
- The Store & Singlemen’s Quarters: Intimate, traditional cottages offering an “old-world” country atmosphere for couples or solo travelers (contact the station directly for current availability).
- Note: While modern comforts like air-conditioning (Jack’s Cottage) and laundry are provided, the property is a true “digital detox” with no Wi-Fi available in the cottages.
Vineyard, Art & Station Activities
Taabinga Station combines traditional agriculture with modern creative and viticultural pursuits:
- Boutique Vineyard: Established in 1995 on rich red volcanic soil, the station produces small-batch Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay. Wines are available via direct inquiry.
- Farmhouse Makers: The station regularly hosts creative workshops led by local art teachers. Topics include pottery, Shibori dyeing, macrame, drawing, and painting. Private workshops can be arranged for groups of six or more.
- Station Tours: Historic homestead tours (including the blacksmith’s shop and dairy) are available by appointment for groups, often including morning or afternoon tea.
Regional Highlights & Nature
The station is a 2.5-hour drive from Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, serving as a gateway to South Burnett attractions:
- Dark Skies: Kingaroy holds Dark Skies certification; the station offers incredible stargazing and is only 20 minutes from the Kingaroy Observatory.
- Local Events: Ideally located for visitors attending the Burrandowan Picnic Races (May), BaconFest (August), and the South Burnett Rail Trail.
