Kinbombi Falls Campground (Goomeri, South Burnett)
Off-Grid Nature Escape: Kinbombi Falls Campground
Kinbombi Falls Campground is a scenic, hidden gem located just 10 minutes (about 11km) southeast of Goomeri. Tucked away in the western cattle country of the Gympie Region, this free rest area sits at the edge of a dramatic rocky gorge. It’s a highly rated retreat for self-sufficient travellers looking for a quiet, nature-focused stopover with local wildlife like wallaroos, possums, and abundant birdlife. Known for its deep natural swimming hole (best visited after significant rain) and its proximity to the historic Kilkivan to Kingaroy Rail Trail, it is the perfect off-grid escape.
Free Camping & Site Information
Managed by the Gympie Regional Council, the campground offers a spacious, flat, and semi-shaded grassy area adjacent to the falls. It is a fantastic low-cost facility for travellers exploring the Wide Bay and South Burnett regions:
- Site Suitability: The flat terrain offers easy access and turnarounds for conventional 2WD vehicles, caravans, camper trailers, and large “big rig” motorhomes.
- Dogs: The site is highly pet-friendly! You can bring your furry friends, provided they remain on a leash at all times (there are even dog poo bag dispensers on-site).
- Fires & BBQs: Campfires are permitted in the provided communal fire pits (subject to local fire bans). There are also picnic tables and BBQs available, but you must bring your own milled firewood.
Gorge Walking Tracks & Waterfalls
The main drawcard of Kinbombi is the network of short but steep walking trails that allow you to explore the gorge and the seasonally flowing waterfall:
- The Lookout: An easy-to-moderate walk leading to a viewing platform with sweeping vistas over the rugged rock formations and the waterfall itself.
- The Base of the Falls: A steep descent via approximately 230 concrete stairs. At the bottom, a short scramble over rocks leads you to the deep main pools—often home to turtles and monitor lizards. When the conditions are right (after heavy rain), this is a beautiful spot for a swim.
- The Ridge Walk: A more challenging track along the razorback ridge for those with a good sense of balance, offering elevated views of the rocky escarpment.
Facilities & What to Bring (Off-Grid Prep)
As a remote rest area, facilities are well-maintained but basic. Since you are off the beaten path, visitors must come prepared:
- Amenities: Spotlessly clean, modern flushing toilets and multiple wheelie bins are provided for your convenience.
- Water: There is no drinking water available. A tap is located near the toilets, but the water is untreated and only suitable for washing. You must bring your own potable drinking water.
- Connectivity: Prepare for a digital detox! Mobile coverage is extremely limited to non-existent (even for Telstra users, who may need to drive back towards Goomeri for a signal).
- Provisions: Stock up before you arrive. The nearest supplies, fuel, and the famous Goomeri Bakery are located roughly 11km away in town.
